Social media is a powerful medium for brands to engage with their consumers, especially during a public health crisis (PHC) when consumers are under duress. However, the impact of social media brand messages on consumer responses during a PHC is under-researched. Accordingly, this paper examines the brand message appeals that enhance online consumer response during a recent PHC in form of the COVID-19 pandemic. Four message appeals – emotional, rational, moral, and no-crisis – are proposed. The online consumer response to the messages with those appeals is measured by likes and shares. The variation of the effect across brands that sell essential and non-essential products/services are also examined. Following an exploratory study that examines 100 brand tweets to confirm the presence of the proposed message appeals, a total of 26,362 brand tweets on Twitter are collected and empirically analysed. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

Purpose: The global pandemic and the resulting rapid and large-scale digitization changed the way firms recognized and understood knowledge curation and management. The changing nature of work and work systems necessitated changes in knowledge management (KM), some of which are likely to have a long-term impact. Using the lens of technology in practice, the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of technology agency on KM structures and practices that evolved across five knowledge-intensive global organizations. This study then argues that sustainable knowledge management (SKM) systems evolve in specific contexts. Design/methodology/approach: This study adopts a qualitative case study design to examine five multinational knowledge-intensive global organizations’ KM systems and practices across diverse industry sectors. Findings: Based on the findings, the authors develop SKM systems and practices model relevant to a post-pandemic organizational context. The authors argue that KM digitization and adoption support socialization in knowledge sharing. Further formalization through organizational enabling systems aids the externalization of knowledge sharing. Deliberate practices promoted with leadership support are likely to sustain in the post-COVID era. Further, organizations that evolved ad-hoc or idiosyncratic approaches to managing hybrid working are more likely to revert to legacy KM systems. The authors eventually theorize about the socialization of human-to-human and technology-mediated human interactions and develop the three emerging SKM structures. Originality/value: This study contributed to practitioners and researchers by developing the various tenets of SKM. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

This paper is devoted to a new two-parameter distribution on (Figure presented.) having an original additive stochastic structure. It is defined by the sum of two independent discrete random variables, where one is defined based on the Laplace distribution and the other on a transformed version of a distribution that can be viewed as a relative binomial distribution. It can thus also be viewed as a perturbed version of the Laplace distribution. We present some interesting properties of the proposed distribution, such as its moments (ordinary, non-central, incomplete moments, etc.), characteristic function, skewness, and kurtosis, among others. The distribution is also applied to practical datasets from finance and health studies, where it is seen to perform better than some of the existing models defined on (Figure presented.). © 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Purpose: Outpatient care delivery is one of the key revenue sources of a hospital which plays a salient role in timely care delivery. The key purpose of the study is to propose a multi-objective simulation-based decision support model that considers the cost of care delivery and patient dissatisfaction as its two key conflicting objectives. Patient dissatisfaction considers service fairness. Patient idiosyncrasies such as no-show, unpunctuality and balking have been considered in the model involving multiple classes of patients. Design/methodology/approach: A model has been designed using data collected from field investigations. In the first stage, queuing theory based discrete event simulation model has been developed. Genetic algorithm has been used to solve the scalarized problem and obtain actionable insights. In the second stage, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) has been involved to achieve the Pareto optimal fronts considering equal priority of the two objectives. Findings: The computational results considering various parameter settings can help in efficient resource planning while ensuring better care delivery. The model proposed in the study provides structural insights on the business strategy of healthcare service providers on optimizing the dual goals of care delivery cost and service fairness. Originality/value: The study is one of the early works that helps to improve the care delivery process by taking into consideration the environmental factors as well as service fairness. The study demonstrates the usage of simulation-based multi-objective optimization to provide a more sustainable patient centric care delivery. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Many a times a need may arise to estimate either a certain ratio or the sum of the shape parameters of two independent gamma populations. We try to tackle this problem through appropriate and novel two-stage sampling strategies. The first part of this paper deals with developing a two-stage methodology to estimate the ratio α/ (α+ β) coming from two independent gamma populations with parameters (α, 1) and (β, 1) respectively. We assume a weighted squared error loss function and aim at controlling the associated risk function per unit cost by bounding it from above by a known constant ω. We also establish first-order properties of our stopping rules. The second part of this paper deals with obtaining a two-stage sampling procedure to estimate the sum α+ β instead. We also provide extensive simulation analysis and real data analysis using data from cancer studies to show encouraging performances of our proposed stopping strategies. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Increasing depression and mental health problems among the elderly during the pandemic have become a grave concern. In the present study, we borrowed from the emotional contagion theory and examined the association between social media use (SMU) and depression among the elderly during the pandemic. Our findings suggest that active but not passive SMU is positively related to depression. Moreover, we also examined if SMU (both active and passive) has a varying effect on the mental health of the elderly based on their race, i.e. blacks and whites. Our findings suggest that active SMU is detrimental for both blacks and whites, whereas passive SMU is positively related to depression only among blacks. Further, we undertook multiperiod analyses where depression scores were measured at four different time periods. We found that the adverse impact of SMU on depression persists over time. The present study draws attention to the antecedents of depression among the elderly during COVID-19. Implications for theory and practice are discussed. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The implementation of Industry 4.0 (I4) technologies has gained momentum due to several inherent benefits associated with their adoption. However, the benefits of I4 technologies are yet to be realised to the full potential, specifically in the case of emerging economies. Managers need to focus on certain critical factors for the successful implementation of I4 technologies. Though some studies have proposed factors for implementing I4 technologies, empirical examination of critical factors still lacks in the published literature. This study proposes and empirically analyses the critical factors for adopting I4 technologies in the following Indian manufacturing industries: electrical/electronics, automotive, textiles, paper and plastics. The key factors across six different categories (organisational, workforce management, external support, technological infrastructure, usage of data and regulations) are examined. Further, the contingency effects of firm size and industry sector are also examined. The results are useful for managers in manufacturing industries as it can help them to understand the key factors for adopting I4 technologies. The results are equally useful for managers who are planning to implement I4 technologies in their firms or are in the early phase of I4 implementation. Copyright © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The Bayesian sampling plan for two-parameter exponential distribution has been considered by Lam (Statistician, 39, 53–66, 1990) under the conventional Type-II censoring. Lin et al. (Commun. Stat.—Simul. Comput., 37, 1101–1116, 2008b) have obtained an exact Bayesian sampling plan for one-parameter exponential distribution under Type-I and Type-II hybrid censoring schemes. In this paper, we obtain an optimal Bayesian sampling plan for the two-parameter exponential distribution under Type-I hybrid censoring scheme based on a four-parameter conjugate prior, introduced by Varde (J. Am. Stat. Assoc., 64, 621–631 1969). Bayes risk expressions of Lam (Statistician, 39, 53–66, 1990) for the conventional Type-II censoring scheme can be obtained as special cases of the Type-I hybrid censoring scheme. The optimal Bayesian sampling plan cannot be obtained analytically, we provide a numerical algorithm to compute the optimal Bayesian sampling plan. Different optimal Bayesian sampling plans have been reported. © 2021, Indian Statistical Institute.

The aim of this study was to evaluate how indicators of patent quality affect the value of a patent, which can be measured by how often it is renewed (or “survives”). Intellectual property rights (IPRs) are becoming more important in a wide range of industries. In the same way, a country's intellectual strength can be judged by how many patents it has and how much research and development it does. The Cox-PH model and the accelerated failure time (AFT) model are used in this study to determine the patent's worth across the five major technology groups and ownership status. The final sample for survival analysis is made up of 40132 patents that were obtained from the Indian Patent Office between 1995 and 2005. (IPO). We find that broad academic patents don't last longer, but that the patent's ability to be used internationally makes it last longer. In contrast, institutional patents are geographically restricted. The collaboration appears to have a greater impact on patent value. © KOSIME, ASIALICS, STEPI 2023.

The healthcare industry may benefit from the implementation of a system that facilitates safe and efficient data transmission if business-to-business (B2B) methods were more widely adopted and used. Many aspects of healthcare, like as patient access to physicians, the efficiency of information trans- mission, and the quality of care received, stand to benefit from this development. However, a primary issue for the development of B2B-based healthcare systems is the inability to handle a large quantity of data generated by smart devices. in this context, in this paper, we analysis the issues related to big data in B2B-based healthcare sector. First, we give the background and the advantages of using big data technology in the B2B-based healthcare sector in general; then we discuss the security aspects of the big data. Then, we discuss different security techniques proposed by the researchers to maintain the security of B2B-based health care sector. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

There is widespread agreement that information systems are the lifeblood of the global economy, providing businesses with a crucial competitive edge in international markets and giving the world's governments and corporations of the 21st century the foundation they need to ensure the safety of their citizens and deliver superior services. Despite their importance, information systems face significant risks within and outside of the company. The best security methods can be circumvented by professional hackers, as the complexity of security attacks, the number of vulnerabilities, and the absence of implementation of quality information security management within companies have expanded substantially in recent years. For the sake of this discussion, the authors examine several security paradigms designed by scientists to protect the operations of multinational corporations. © 2023 IGI Global. All rights reserved.

Smart and innovative education is an integral part of the development of sustainable entrepreneurship practices. Due to this, UNCED included it on its agenda. The primary goal of smart education is to teach young people to be responsible members of society in the years to come. The youth of this generation should have the opportunity to play an active role in shaping our future. For the sake of future generations, they should be taught to accept personal responsibility for their own well-being and the well-being of future generations. However, with traditional teaching techniques, this goal is not achieved; therefore, there is a requirement for the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, cloud computing, AI, and machine learning with the education process for the development of sustainable entrepreneurship practices in order to achieve a better future. In this context, we analyze the current smart education techniques proposed by different researchers that lead to the development of sustainable entrepreneurship practices. In this investigation, we also highlight the various limitations and challenges of the current smart education system. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Social media platforms have become very popular these days among individuals and organizations. On the one hand, organizations use social media as a potential tool to create awareness of their products among consumers, and on the other hand, social media data is useful to predict the national crisis, election polls, stock prediction, etc. However, nowadays, a debate is going on about the quality of data generated on social media platforms, whether it is relevant for prediction and generalization. The article discusses the relevance and quality of data obtained from social media in the context of research and development. Social media data quality issues may impact the generalizability and reproducibility of the results of the study. The paper explores possible reasons for quality issues in the data generated over social media platforms along with the suggestive measures to minimize them using the proposed social media data quality framework. © 2021 Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode.

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems and applications based on them are fast pervading the various functions of an organization. While AI systems enhance organizational performance, thereby catching the attention of the decision makers, they nonetheless pose threats of job losses for human resources. This in turn pose challenges to human resource managers, tasked with governing the AI adoption processes. However, these challenges afford opportunities to critically examine the various facets of AI systems as they interface with human resources. To that end, we systematically review the literature at the intersection of AI and human resource management (HRM). Using the configurational approach, we identify the evolution of different theme based causal configurations in conceptual and empirical research and the outcomes of AI-HRM interaction. We observe incremental mutations in thematic causal configurations as the literature evolves and also provide thematic configuration based explanations to beneficial and reactionary outcomes in the AI-HRM interaction process. © 2022
